Current Event II

In the form of a second event, I would like to bring the situation that occurred in Rome on April 9, 2019. A woman came to court with a statement that she was raped by two young South Americans, but her complaint was denied. The judges explained their position by saying that the woman was, according to them, too “courageous” and unattractive to be raped.
The sentence was overturned by the Supreme Court of Cassation, which ordered a new appeal hearing, canceling the acquittal of two young people. At the moment, the fate of women and young people is unknown, but I would very much like to hope that the rape victim is being investigated, and the guilty will not be found without punishment.
I believe that this case is a bright example of lookism. The woman was not only raped by two young people, but also subsequently insulted by the judges, who did not believe her complaint and called her ugly.
Based on this case, we can conclude that in society, beautiful people are treated with respect, and ugly - negatively. Simply put, if you are lucky with your appearance, you are privileged and use all the bonuses, but if you managed to be born unsympathetic, then get ready for sanctions. No one will ever legitimise this state of affairs; therefore, lookism today is hypocrisy and double standards.
I think this behaviour is unacceptable not for judges, but also in personal relationships. People need to be tolerant and not judge people by their appearance, as this indicates a distant mind. However, someone who says that he does not evaluate people in appearance will turn out to be to a large extent a hypocrite. By our own will or against it, we do this dirty work every time. Everyone likes beautiful and beautiful. Another question is that this should not be the main criterion for assessing the personality or become a reason for criticism.

Aleksandra, You’ve chosen a very interesting topic for me. I was concerned about Lookism for the past couple of years. Sadly, people don’t pay as much attention to this issue as it should be. Lookism is a discrimination against people who have been judged by others as unattractive. And the situations you described in here, which was in Rome, is completely awful and terrifying.
I think we should get rid of this “standardized” and fictional beauty which is heavily photoshopped and covers almost every magazine.
You did a great job by pointing out that we should be aware that this problem exists and, unfortunately, takes a huge part in our society.
Thank you!
